About Starting Byte

Video courses for people who build software.

Starting Byte makes short, animated video courses for people who build software. We started it because most technical video is a screen recording of someone typing, and the ideas that matter most - how data flows through a system, why an architecture fails under load, how an attack chains together - are hard to see that way.

How the courses are made

Every lesson starts as a written script reviewed for technical accuracy. We then turn it into a motion-graphics explainer: diagrams that assemble step by step, code that is highlighted as it is discussed, and timelines that show cause and effect. Lessons are kept to a few minutes so each one teaches a single idea well.

What we cover

The catalog spans frontend and backend development, DevOps and cloud, data, AI and machine learning, cybersecurity and building applications with AI. Our blog publishes practical guides on the same topics, with worked examples you can follow on your own machine.

Our principles

  • Explain the mental model first, then the syntax.
  • Show real trade-offs, not toy examples.
  • Respect the learner's time: no filler, no padding.
  • Keep a meaningful part of the catalog free.
