Why we teach with animation instead of screen recordings

Screen recordings are cheap to make and expensive to watch. Here is why every Starting Byte lesson is a motion-graphics explainer.

By Starting Byte Team

Most technical video courses are a screen recording with a voice over it. They are quick to produce, but they push the hard work onto the viewer: you hunt for the cursor, squint at a terminal and pause every thirty seconds.

One idea per scene

Every Starting Byte lesson is split into scenes. Each scene explains one idea, and the visuals are designed for that idea: a diagram that builds, a code block that highlights the line being discussed, a timeline that shows what happens when.

Shorter, denser, easier to revisit

  • Lessons are short enough to finish on a coffee break.
  • Visuals carry the structure, so narration can stay tight.
  • Because scenes are discrete, coming back to one concept is fast.

Built with code

Lessons are rendered with Remotion, so every frame is React. That means we can fix a typo in a diagram without re-recording anything, and the player you watch on is the same engine that renders the video.
